Cyndi 2020 | A Progressive Campaign for LA City Council District 14
In 2020, Cyndi Otteson ran a progressive, groundbreaking grassroots campaign for Los Angeles City Council District 14 against a national-career politician, for a seat held by men for 100 years. As a first-time candidate she placed 2nd, nearly missing a mandated runoff race by 2.6% without taking special interest money, despite being outspent by the eventual winner by $1.3 million dollars.
Many political campaigns can end in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, however with Cyndi’s business acumen, she ended her groundbreaking campaign, debt-free!
Cyndi’s people centered agenda was focused on social, racial and economic justice issues and a corruption free City Hall. She promoted this message at forums, interviews, debates, media appearances and door-to-door campaigning throughout Los Angeles City Council District 14 representing 259,700 constituents and spanning 23 square miles, from Downtown L.A. 's business district and Skid Row to Eagle Rock, El Sereno, Highland Park and Boyle Heights.

“Otteson, who lives in Eagle Rock, (has) become a favorite among some L.A. progressive activists who are backing (Bernie) Sanders, the odds-on favorite to win California’s presidential primary… She’s betting that left-leaning voters will like her positions on climate change, transportation and keeping special-interest money out of City Hall.”
- Los Angeles Times
“With a commitment to transparent governance, Cyndi is not taking any money from developers, fossil fuel interests, or corporations. She will fight for affordable housing, support renters to stop evictions, and make our streets safe and accessible for walkers, bikers, and public transit commuters. She will ensure that unhoused people in her district and across LA receive the services they need as we build bridge housing and supportive housing. She supports getting LA to 100% renewable energy by 2030, centering frontline communities and workers in the transition. Cyndi will also fight for our public schools and against the charter lobby, making sure all kids have a safe and healthy place to play and learn.”
